Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.- "Harlem Nights (1900-1940) - An evening of adult expressions of African American influences in music, art, the spoken word and casino play".
We are encouraging our patronages to consider "Harlem Renaissance Attire" (i.e. Men- Zoot Suites and Women Flapper dresses). The $40 dollar ticket price will include admission, complimentary food and beverages from local vendors, and a starter bag of casino chips. A portion of the proceeds will go to fund scholarships (at Willowridge, Madsion, Jones, and Sterling high schools), Project Alpha, and our Historical Black Colleges and University (HBCU) tour.
An added venue this year will be the attempted recreation of 125th Street circa 1926 complete with vintage cars and famed locals of the day (i.e. The Savoy Ballroom, The Cotton Club, and Smalls Paradise). Though the dress and the mood will be reminiscent of yesteryear the live music, DJ, art, and the spoken word will highlight current local talent. The Harlem Renaissance was and extremely important period in in the development of African American Culture. It was an "Awakening"! Providing us with the offering of such notables a Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes, and Aaron Douglas. The event will be held at the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center on 2151 West Holcombe Boulevard -Medical Center area
